I’d like to shed light on a issue that has been on my mind lately.
Companies like HomeAdvisor & Angie’s List (just acquired by HA) have been providing a service that promises to match up homeowners with service professionals to complete their home projects.
Here’s how it works:
Homeowner: Goes on website, signs up, requests to receive quotes from ‘screened service professionals’ for their project .
Contractor: Either signs up on website or receives phone call from a sales rep. Purchases a package (ranging from $500 and up) that will put their listings highest in search results and will send in qualified leads(costing an additional $15-30 per lead). Receives leads for their industry.
Here’s where it gets weird, the same lead given to one contractor is also sold to anywhere between 3-5 additional contractors. I’ll let you do the math on that. So now that they have ripped off the contractors, lets see what’s going on with the homeowners. Ask any contractor how much screening was done for them to sign up for the lead service and most will answer, little to none. So we also have homeowners being ripped off because they are being sent to potentially uninsured, inexperienced contractors.
Don’t take my word for it, just look at HA’s over 1K BBB complaints
